You wake up at a crossroads in the middle of the country. It is mid-day. Nothing is around except for an old guitar case at your side.
You open the guitar case, and, as expected, find a guitar inside but nothing else.
Which way do you go?
[[Go north]]
[[Go south]]
[[Go east]]
[[Go west]]After walking north for some time, you arrive at a copse of trees.
You notice that here, the birds don't sing.
What do you do?
[[Enter the forest]]After walking south for some time, you arrive at an abandoned building.
Its weathered sign outside says it used to be called Black Dog Juke Joint.
What do you do?
[[Go inside]]
[[Keep walking]]After walking east for some time, you arrive at a large, swift river.
A bored-looking ferryman is reading a book on his barge, hardly noticing you until you are right in front of him.
What do you do?
[[Ask to cross the river]]
[[Ask what he is reading]]After walking west for some time, you arrive at set of train tracks that run north south.
A train is approaching quickly but just slow enough to catch it.
What do you do?
[[Hop the train]]
[[Walk along the tracks]]The ferryman glances at you, then looks back down at his book.
"That'll be one dollar," he says.
You don't have any money on you.
What do you do?
[[Ask what he is reading]]
[[Ask to cross for free]]
[[Play your guitar]]
[[Walk away]]He shows you the cover without a word.
It's called "(title)" by (author).
What do you do?
[[Quote from the book]]
[[Play your guitar]]
[[Walk away]] You hop onboard the train into an empty boxcar without anyone noticing you.
You breathe a sigh of relief, and settle into a dusty corner of the car.
With nothing else to do, [[you fall asleep]]"Can't do that," the ferryman says. "But you're welcome to swim!"
What do you do?
[[Walk away]]
[[Swim across the river]]
[[Play your guitar]]You look at your guitar case. The ferryman still looks bored.
You don't know how to play guitar, but know a few songs that you could try.
What song do you play?
Unsatisfied, you walk back in the direction of [[The Crossroads]] you came from. You decide to attempt to swim across the river.
The water is swift; you lose your guitar case downstream, but ultimately, make it to the other side unharmed.
From the opposite shore, you can see the faint traces of a [[town]] up ahead.Waking up, you notice it is now early dawn. A large, sparkling body of water is glimmering in the morning light just outside of your boxcar.
Where once you were in the country, now it looks like you are in the desert.
The train is slowing down.
What do you do?
[[Hop off the train]]You hop off the train, and head in the direction of the glittering lake.
The sky is hazy and cloudless, and is slowly turning from pink to blue as the sun rises.
At first, there is nothing around the lake. But as you walk along its perimeter, you start to see signs of life: remains of campfires, pots and pans, heaps of trash.
Soon enough, you come upon a handmade sign: WELCOME TO THE SALTON SEA
